Gluten-Free Fish and Chips in Edinburgh

Red Fishmarket restaurant from outside,

Craving gluten-free fish and chips in Edinburgh? Feeling a bit limited by your food choices? No worries, I’m here to help!

No food allergy should ever stop you from enjoying delicious eats. Whether you call Edinburgh home or you’re just stopping by with an appetite, getting your hands on the perfect fish and chips shouldn’t be a tough task.

And let’s be honest, have you even visited Edinburgh if you haven’t tasted the legendary fish and chips?

So, today, we’re taking a tour of my top picks for the tastiest, fully-vetted gluten-free fish and chips in Scotland’s heart.

Best gluten free fish and chips in Edinburgh

The Fishmarket

It’s probably no surprise that The Fishmarket ranks at number one on my list.

One of Edinburgh’s most popular fish and chip restaurants, people seriously travel far and wide to visit The Fishmarket. Nestled in the chic Newhaven harbour area in Leith, they only serve the freshest of fish to its visitors, including a great selection of gluten-free options.

It’s so popular, you might want to order ahead to skip the line. Plus, they’re serious about gluten-free options, using a separate fryer and gluten-free batter. The best part? They get their fish directly from the fishmonger next door. So, you can enjoy top-notch gluten-free fish and chips and a nice view of the old harbour.

Pierinos

Also located in Leith, Pierinos is a local hotspot for its regulars and a popular venue for tourists. Only a short drive from the city centre of Edinburgh, you can enjoy its gluten-free fish and chips every wednesday.

While you can opt for dining in, I do recommend taking your gluten-free fish and chips out, and wandering down to the shore to soak in the views of Leith’s famous harbour.

#fish

In Edinburgh’s south side, #fish, a family business, stands out for its special gluten-free and vegan menu. They’re big on quality and only use ethically sourced fish, making them a top pick for fish and chips lovers.

Customers are all about their fast delivery and the batter’s crunchiness, not to mention the fresh, minty mushy peas that come along. The staff are super nice, adding warmth to every order. If you’re around Marchmont or just in the mood for a good chippy, #fish won’t let you down — Check out their gluten-free brownie for after your fish supper.

St Andrews Restaurant & Takeaway

This popular restaurant is nestled away in the lovely beachside area of Portobello – a popular, picturesque town for its stunning sand beaches, small boutiques, and quirky pubs.

St Andrew’s restaurant is located on the High Street in Portobello, it offers famously crispy gluten-free fish and chips, cooked in a dedicated fryer, along with tempting GF pizza and pasta options, all available for takeaway or to enjoy in-house with their warm service.

So, if you’re planning a trip to the beach in Edinburgh, St Andrews Restaurant and Takeaway should on your must-visit list!

Berties Proper Fish & Chips

Set in the heart of Edinburgh’s Old Town, Berties offers a unique twist on the traditional fish and chips experience, catering specially to gluten-free requirements.

While they fry their gluten-free options in vegetable oil for instead of their dripping beef fat, it doesn’t compromise the flavour or your experience. The fish is tasty, complemented by a generous serving of quality chips.

Pair these with a pint of authentic Scottish beer, and you’ve got a meal that’s both hearty and mindful of dietary needs. It’s a must-visit for gluten-free travelers!
