How to Travel Gluten-Free in The Bahamas

Beach in the Bahamas

If you like eating naturally gluten-free cuisine like fresh fish, vegetables, and rice, you’ll be in luck in The Bahamas. If you only eat gluten-free substitutes, you’ll be disappointed.

I found eating out in The Bahamas to be very easy for the most part, but without much variety. Be sure to note your gluten “allergy” when ordering (Celiac is not commonly known here). Also carefully ask questions when ordering – for example, don’t ask if a sauce is gluten free. Ask if a sauce has flour in it. Steer clear of flavored rice (unfortunately this means the popular local peas and rice dish) unless you’re able to confidently identify if the seasonings and stocks used are all gluten-free.

The Best Gluten-Free Restaurants in The Bahamas

These are the best restaurants for eating gluten-free in The Bahamas. Note that many places required advance reservations, so do some planning and call ahead of time so you don’t miss out!

The Best Gluten-Free Restaurants in Nassau

Fi’lia: Italian food

Franky Gone Bananas: Restaurant at Atlantis that’s good with allergies

Blue Sail: Gorgeous ocean views

Cleo Mediterraneo Baha Mar: Higher end Mediterranean restaurant.

Spritz Bar & Restaurant: A small and cute wine bar.

NRG: A health food cafe that offers lots of vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options.

Best Restaurants Eleuthera, Bahamas

Da Perk Cafe: My favorite restaurant in the Bahamas! Only open for breakfast and lunch, check the hours before you go. A casual spot but the owner really understands Celiac, and there are lots of safe options here including gluten-free wraps.

Tippy’s Beachfront Bar and Restaurant: A fun scene with live music on some nights. The restaurant is right on the beach, and takes care when preparing gluten-free.

Buccaneer Club: Another place with a great outdoor space and live music. The Greek salad here was one of my favorite meals on the island.

1648, An Island Restaurant (Drinks): Located at a hotel, this is the best spot for a sunset cocktail!

Bacchus Fine Foods: A small store that stocks lots of imported food including many gluten-free items. They also have a small cafe attached that’s great for a gluten-free breakfast.

Island Farm: A local farmstand where you can buy fresh fruit and produce along with some other groceries. Don’t miss the mango sorbet!

The Best Things to Do on Eleuthera Island, Bahamas

Where to Stay in Eleuthera, Bahamas

Pineapple Fields Resort Hotel, Eleuthera, Bahamas

Pineapple Fields Resort is the best hotel in Eleuthera. This gorgeous property is situated right across the street from French Leave Beach (a pink sand beach that’s one of the most beautiful on the island). It’s also right across the street from Tippy’s, which is so nice and convenient for when you want a quick meal (or want to go out dancing) without having to worry about driving.

Pineapple Fields offers condo-style rooms (available in one or two bedrooms). Every room has a fully-equipped kitchen which is great if you don’t want to eat out every night, as food in the Bahamas can get really expensive. Each room also has a washer-dryer and a private outdoor deck.

Pineapple Fields is centrally located in the middle of Eleuthera, so you’ll be close to everything. I worked for part of my trip to the Bahamas, and the WiFi at Pineapple Fields was amazing (even by the pool!)

Where to Stay in Nassau, Bahamas

Riu Palace Paradise Island: This hotel is an adults-only all-inclusive, so stay here if you’re looking for a romantic vacation in the Bahamas.

Grand Hyatt Baha Mar: This huge resort offers plenty of activities plus six outdoor pools to choose from. There are a number of restaurants and bars on property, so this is a good spot if you just want to chill at your hotel in the Bahamas.

The Island House: If you’re not a fan of mega-resorts, check out the boutique Island House on Nassau.

The Ocean Club: No one does luxury better than the Four Seasons, and their Ocean Club hotel on Nassau is no different – this property is stunning!

Warwick Paradise Island: With a prime harbor location, five restaurants, and two bars, the Warwick Paradise Island is a fun choice for a honeymoon or friends trip to the Bahamas. This is an all-inclusive adults-only hotel.

The Royal at Atlantis: On a family trip to the Bahamas? Kids will love the Atlantis resort, which has iconic waterslides, pools, and lots of fun family-friendly activities.
